Then the wind ran out and the billiards stopped, and i felt that I had ruined, my one real ghost-story. I stayed for the evening, while the wind and the rat and the sash and the window-bolt played a ding-dong "hundred and fifty up". There was an interview with the butler, however as he promptly lost his head, wrath gave place to pity, and pity led to a long dialog, in the course of which he put the fats Engineer-Sahib's tragic dying in three separate stations-two of them fifty miles away. And well it'd, when a restless little rat was working to and fro inside the dingy ceiling-cloth, and a piece of unfastened window-sash was making fifty breaks off the window bolt as it shook within the breeze. From a window on the Hotel de Rome, Mark and friends had been "reviewing" the ceremonial entry of the King of Italy in Berlin. The marker expressed an opinion that Farnie had been and gone and performed it.

Once they arrived at the varsity gates, Monk and Danvers turned to go in the path of their type-room, the Remove, leaving Farnie at the door of the Upper Fourth. After a protracted, long whereas, the game stopped, and the door banged. The door was open and that i might see into the room. Not for everything in Asia would I have dropped the door-bar and peered into the darkish of the subsequent room. It was an absurd worry; as a result of creatures who could play at midnight can be above such superfluities. There are smoking-rooms for individuals who smoke, billiard-rooms for those who play billiards, and a card-room for those who play playing cards. Otherwise there is no explaining the friendship that arose between them. At seven bells the first gong rang; at eight there was breakfast, for corresponding to weren't too seasick to eat it. AT first you have got the impression of a provincial city; however all of the sudden you marvel whose this old castle can be.

But I would, to start with, put eighty miles of sound assessed crop-land between myself and that dâk-bungalow earlier than nightfall. If a man said to a confirmed dâk-bungalow-haunter: "There is a corpse in the following room, and there is a mad woman in the following however one, and the girl and man on that camel have just eloped from a place sixty miles away," the hearer wouldn't disbelieve because he would know that nothing is just too wild, grotesque, or horrible to occur in a dâk-bungalow. If I had inspired him the butler would have wandered all by way of Bengal with his corpse. It ought to have the better of every little thing. Set such a man on a putting-inexperienced with a putter and three or four balls, and he will very seemingly putt as well as the most effective skilled; ask him to drive or play a brassey and he will be nowhere. A man who foozles his drive and slices his method, but who's nevertheless all the time down in two strokes after he has acquired on the placing-inexperienced, if not in a single, is very arduous to beat besides his opponent is a extremely good participant.

One man insists on having his caddie and all people he may be playing with, mounted behind his back and nowhere else-on the absurd ground, I suppose, that if they take up their place in another spot they catch his eye. There are different players who've a match if, when they've the honour, they discover their opponent's ball teed up earlier than their caddie has put their own on the tee. The third shift was to Calcutta, and there the Sahib died whereas driving a canine-cart. It was a tricky job to induce him to leave his experiments for some time to unravel that ghost mystery that gave the police so much trouble. Since then I've, by his assistant, John Matthews, who was a classmate of mine, obtained his interest engaged in quite a few police matters. How about you, then? We very, very seldom played the piano; we performed the flute and the clarinet collectively, and made good music, too, what there was of it, but we always performed the standard tune; it was a very fairly tune-how effectively I remember it-I wonder once i shall ever eliminate it. In billiards you play for an entire night or for an entire match on the identical desk; that is a really small object as compared with a putting-green, and if you have any pretensions to play at all, you ought to gauge the tempo of a billiard-desk after an hour's play.
